Beginning about 500 BCE in Greece, patrons of the theatre called choregos (χορηγος) provided support for festival performances known as dithyrambs. These performances were lavish contests and the success of a particular production was so tied to the largess and efforts of the choregos that prizes were awarded to the best choregos as well. In adopting this term for its leadership body Ampersand pays homage to the cradle of western theatre and elevates four positions that are essential to the success of our program.
